The next race in the Northern Runner Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is Blakey Blitz on Sunday 22nd May 2015. This is a tough race 17km with 855 metres of ascent. Don’t be fooled by the downhill start, you run back up the same hill to get to the finish and it’s a long drag. Road races in the beautiful Langdale Valley have been run for nearly thirty years and in that time many thousands of runners of all standards have enjoyed the stunning location of the races while completing their chosen distance. 10k competitors enjoy an undulating road course out and back along the Langdale Valley taking in the villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater along with the stunning scenery all along the valley. A windy but clear day, a little overcast although slightly wet underfoot, generally good running conditions was what greeted runners for the latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series. The women’s event was essentially a tussle between Caroline Graham and Kim England. The next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is Glaisdale Rigg on Sunday 8th March 10.30am. The course is 13.7 km long with 562 metres of ascent. Registration is at the Arnecliffe Arms, Glaisdale, Castleton, Whitby, North Yorkshire. Entry is £6 and on the day only. The course has some good bridleways and bits of tarmac but, the single track over the moor and through the woods plus the final descent are always muddy. The latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was a great day for a race. Mist on the top which was thinning all the time and very wet going under foot. At the start of the Commondale Beacon Ian McGrath was leading with a group following consisting of Danny Braun, Chris Roberts and Simon Rycroft. They set off across the top moor with Chris moving up into third on his own. In the women’s event the eventual first three were all in a close group.... Read More

The weather for the latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was cold with frost hard in the ground making running slower. There was another record turnout and a late start record to continue- inadvertently- the 11.00 a.m. starts of the last two races. Everyone however seemed in good humour and the field set off immediately splitting into two crocodiles on the ascent. The juniors managed to negotiate their courses without too much of a to do!
