Leading away was Paul Butler having helped establish the course he knew where he was going. He was pursued by Paul Whittaker, Steve Hardy, Chris Roberts and Ian McGrath. In the women’s event it was a clear lead at Crossley Side Farm for Becky Pentry being a good distance ahead of Nicola Kent and Kay Neesam. As the hills were climbed the race... Read More

Altra Zero Drop – But Not a Minimalist Shoe To many runners this description sounds like it is the same as the minimalist or barefoot type of running shoes that where a craze a few years ago. What is different with Altra is that their shoes are not minimal. They have cushioning so you don’t get soar feet from feeling the stones through your shoes. A fantastic opener to the Summer Series. On a day of heavy rain we managed a reasonable window to run with only a few spits and spots. The opening section saw Andy Blackett and last year’s champion Paul Whittaker battling for the early lead with Danny Braun &Ian McGrath but a yard behind. Andy had got a 50 metre lead by the last descent into the wood. At the ‘Angels Staircase’ Andy now had a good lead taking the higher line. This gave him the race with Paul second Ian... Read More

The first race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Summer Series is the Carlton Challenge on Wednesday 6th May starting from the top of Carlton Bank at 7.15pm. The race is 8km long with 360 metres of ascent. Trail shoes would be fine for this event although the final descent is over rough moorland so if you twist your ankle easily on this sort of terrain a fell shoe maybe a better option. Entry is £6 on the day only and registration is on Carlton Bank, above the old cafe... Read More
The last race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was the Maybeck Three Crosses. A cool day with a bit of rain and a strong breeze. Nevertheless the running conditions were good with a firm surface. A small field started this final fixture in the Winter Series. There were 14 marshals and 44 runners. A reflection on those who had left it to the last minute to gain ‘support points.’ The race set off at a pace with Simon Ryecroft and Ian McGrath soon establishing an... Read More
