Transvulcania, the first race in the Sky Running Ultra Series, was won by Emelie Forsberg who was a whisker away from the women’s course record despite having only skied all winter. The men’s race was won by Kilian Jornet in a course record again just coming off a mountaineering ski season. So, maybe we should all be skiing during our winter training ? Northern Runner now has stock of the La Sportiva Anakonda. This is La Sportiva’s replacement for the X-Country. The Anakonda has the same super sticky, heavily lugged outsole which is ideal for fell running. However, the fit, feel and upper of the shoe is much improved. The next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series is the Carlton Challenge. This 5 miler is on Wednesday 15th May starting at 7.15pm. The Sky Running World Ultra Series kicks off this weekend with the Transvulcania on La Palma. This is 83 km of racing with over 4,000 metres of ascent. Fairfield Horseshoe is now the English Fell Running Championship opening event after the Edale Skyline got snowed off in March. Both Lauren Jeska the 2012 women’s champion and Simon Bailey the 2012 men’s champion are entered. Ambleside AC have taken more entries than the 500 limit. So, there are no entries on the day or substitutions. Click here to see the entry list.

If you still looking for this weekends excitment then click here to get your entry to Sunday’s Pier to Pier. This is a nice run following the coach along from South Shields to Sunderland. A distance of about 7 miles. It goes over a mix of terrain although it is mainly the coastal path.

An excellent day with bright sunshine and a good field in the last of the Winter Series. Jayson Cavill & Paul Butler tied for The N.E. Hill Running Assoc. Men’s Winter Champion. It was so close at The Fox & Hounds that Paul led for the majority of the race and Jayson was only able to pass and win on the very last short section.
