Not a bad window in the weather with plenty of gusts and a bit of hail up at the trig point. Generally however fairly warm and not one runner failed to finish. The start was hectic and there was a whole throng together on the first ascent. It soon narrowed down to about 10 competitors in the men’s with Jason Cavill and Paul Darroch not amongst those at this point. The next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is the Three Tops Race on Sunday 27th October 10.30am start. Registration is at the Rugby Club in Guisborough and entry is on the day only. The course is 8 miles long with 2,000 feet of ascent making this race an A medium. The route goes over the peaks of High Cliffe Nab, Roseberry Topping and Hanging Stone. Underfoot conditions will vary from good tracks to single track, heather and the going is good to soft. The second race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series had a good window in the weather after a week of very heavy rain. There was an excellent atmosphere as the 75 runners set off on the approach to the pond. Chris Roberts was first into the lead tracked by Jayson Cavill with Simon Collins and Joe Blackett not far behind. The going is good to soft for Sunday’s Gibside Trail Race. All those lucky enough to have an entry have fun racing through the autumn leaves around Gibside Chapel.
If we fancy an excursion through a lovely part of the North Yorkshire Moors then get over to Levisham Village Hall, Levisham, Nr. Pickering for the next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series. The race starts at 10.30am and is 17km long with 425metres of ascent. Entry is on the day only. The next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is the Saltergate- Levisham on Sunday 20th October which is about 10 miles with 1600 feet of ascent. Registration is at the Levisham Village Hall in the Village of Levisham near Pickering North Yorkshire. The race starts at 10.30 am and entries can only be made on the day. The first race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series 2013/14 was an excellent event for viewing with the very best weather if not a little too hot!. After the old Glider Station circuit the field descended to cross the road near the start line. Here Duncan Archer had a good lead of about 150M with Paul Butler in second a good 100M ahead of Cameron Taylor. These three were now away from the rest of the field.
