Saltergate-Levisham Fell Race 2013

The second race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series had a good window in the weather after a week of very heavy rain. There was an excellent atmosphere as the 75 runners set off on the approach to the pond. Chris Roberts was first into the lead tracked by Jayson Cavill with Simon Collins and Joe Blackett not far behind. That was very much the story of the men’s race with Jayson chasing Chris until the last big climb from the Angel’s staircase to Saltergate Bank top. At this point Jayson put in a monumental effort to pass Chris then go on to hold that lead through to the finish.
Jayson leading his team to a victory over Esk Valley who finished three teams in 2nd 3rd
and 4th. This was principally because a lot of teams such as Knavesmire and Redcar were only fielding three. In the Women’s race Kay Neesam returned after injury to winning ways. Early on there were three in contention Kay, Nicola Kent and Angharad Owen. As the race proceeded Kay just edged away from Nicola with Angharad following her club colleague. Kay went on to win but Nicola and Angharad claimed the team title for Loftus and Whitby just beating New Marske in a count back situation. Don’t forget the winter kit in each race
particularly next week’s ‘A’ category event at Guisborough Best wishes Dave……. Tel
