Well that was the start of the new Summer Series. A cool night but although cloudy the rain held off and gave us some excellent running conditions. There was a large field of 120 plus the one lonely Junior in the Under 12’s race, Adam Wanless was therefore the winner in 8.45. Back to the seniors the large pack wound its way over to the wood and gradually stretched out with Jim Bulman leading from Jack Willis. Postal entries have now closed for this years Pier to Pier but, don’t dispare you can still enter on the day before 9.30am. The opening hours over the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend at Northern Runner are as follows: Saturday 3rd May – 9.00am – 5.30pm Sunday 4th May – CLOSED Monday 5th May – 11.00am – 4.00pm Then normal opening hours will resume.

Kay Neesam (New Marske harriers) flew to the Northern Runner / Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series gaining maximum points. The men’s was won by Jayson Cavill (Pickering) who took his great form to the Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race on Saturday and ran 8 minutes quicker than he did in 2013 taking 3 hours 20 minutes to get round the 60th running of the event. Weather was not on our side for The Fox & Hounds as it approached it’s 30th birthday. Mist was thick and there was a gentle drizzle so much so that a number of runners actually used their compasses! The final race in the Northern Runner Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is the Fox and Hounds Chase on Sunday 27th April starting at 10.30am. Registration/Start/Finish is at the Fox and Hounds Public House in Ainthorpe, Near Danby on the North Yorkshire Moors. The race is about 9 miles long with 1500 feet of ascent. The route is mainly on moorland paths so fell shoes will be best. Entry is on the day only. Click here to see a map of the route.

Weather was set fair for the penultimate race in The Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series. In the men’s race Jim Bulman was away very quickly having established a 100M. lead by the Highcliff turn. He was pursued by a group containing Charlie Stead, Paul Butler,Jason Cavill, Bill Stewart and Chris Roberts.
