High Cup Nick Fell Race Report 2016

High Cup Nick Fell Race 2016

On Saturday 27th February the weather gods shone down on Dufton and provided the Inov-8 High Cup Nick Fell Race with the best conditions ever. Combining this with a squadron of fell running big guns meant the stage was set for some record bashing, including a record entry of 273 runners in the senior race and 40 juniors taking part in the trail races, keeping race officials very busy.

In the Senior race the younger men set a fast pace from the gun with last year’s V40 British Champion (& my arch nemesis!) Rob Hope hanging onto their shirt tails. Tom & Ricky dropped Hope at the Nick where the gradual and long (circa 4 mile) descent begins. Former winner Lightfoot could not break Addison’s invisible tether until hitting the final small drag up into the village along Pusgill Lane, where he gained a 6 second buffer. Alas this gap was sufficient for Ricky to take his foot off the gas short of the line and miss out on finishing under the hour. Still, a new record at a minute quicker than the previous record he set last year. Ricky Lightfoot 1st in 1.00.01, 2nd Tom Addison of Helm Hill 1.00.07, 3rd Rob Hope, Pudsey & Bramley 1.01.04, 4th Carl Bell of Keswick AC 1.03.02, 5th Karl Gray CVFR, 1.03.08 & 6th Wharfedale’s Ted Mason, 1.03.21.

In the women’s race, Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley Harriers was outstanding, taking nearly 3 minutes off her own course record, finishing 1st woman & 17th overall. 2nd was Ambleside’s Lou Roberts 1.15.14, 3rd Katy Moone of Keswick 1.17.38, 4th Karen Robertson of NFR 1.20.08, 5th Howgill Harrier’s Nina Walkingshaw in 1.20.20 & 6th Ambleside’s Steph Jones, 1.24.12.

Two local youngsters took the top Under 23 podium positions, with Hannah Bradley of CFR racing home in 1.24.26 and Howgill’s David Cope 1.09.01.

In the FV50 category, 1st Camilla Lauren-Maatta, 1.26.04 Elvet Striders; 2nd Sally Hougton, 1.28.14Ripon, 3rd Ann Cummings, CFR 1.36.02. In the MV50, 1st Dave Prosser 1.12.48, Keswick AC; 2nd Richard Suddaby FRA 1.14.42 & 3rd Philip Pearson Northern Fells in 1.15.06.

In the fabulous FV60 category, CFR’s Dot Patton took the win in .1.54.35, with Keswick’s Lesley Mallarky chasing her home in 1.55.10 and 3rd Jane Mottram also of CFR in 2.19.03. In the MV60 it was once again Ellenborough’s Jacky Winn who took top spot in 1.22.03, ahead of Holmfirth’s John Adair in 1.28.14, 3rd was Nigel Heppell of Elvet Striders in 1.37.30.

Amazing Mike Gill of Blackhill Bounders took the Men’s V70, making it in in just under the 2 hour mark in 1.59.57. V70 ladies the High Cup Nick challenge awaits you next year!

Senior Team prizes, sponsored by Dufton’s High Cup Wines & Liam and Sue O’Halloran of Midtownfarm went to the Men of Wharfedale and the Women of Keswick.
