The first race of 2015 in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is Captain Cooks Race on New Years Day. The fun starts at 11am from the centre of Great Ayton, North Yorkshire. Registration is in the Royal Oak which is in the market square in Great Ayton. Entry is £7 and all proceeds go to local charities. Fancy dress is welcome. There are junior races for boys and girls in the following age groups U10, U12, U14, and U16. The main race is about 5 miles in length and runs upto Captain Cooks Monument and down in a circular route. Click here to see the race route map. Although some of the course is road and hard packed bridleway the rest is always very muddy and slippy. So, fell shoes with good grips is usually the best footwear.
