Captain Cooks Fell Race 2016

Start 2016 with a great run over the North Yorkshire Moors. The next race in the Northern Runner/Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is Captain Cooks Race on New Years Day. All the proceeds from this race go to local charities. Registration is at The Royal Oak, Great Ayton, North Yorkshire. The start and finish is on the road just outside. Entry is on the day only and £7. The race starts at 11am ish (there is often still a queue of runners trying to enter at 11am so the race usually starts a bit later).

There are junior races for U10, U12, U14, U16 male and female. The distance is appropriate to the age.

For those recovering from the night before. Coffee is available in the Royal Oak before the race.

The run itself is about 5 miles long and the terrain is very mixed. It starts on the road and then onto a bridleway before starting the long steep muddy climb up to Captain Cooks Monument. Once at the monument you descend down some steps and on a good forest road before heading down over a muddy field. Back on the road briefly before the final slog across some muddy fields to finish in the centre of Great Ayton.

Although about half the route is on hard packed trails or road fell shoes or very grippy trail shoes would be best. Click here to see a map of the route.
