Brooks Ghost Max 3 Review
The Brooks Ghost Max 3 is a neutral, everyday road running shoe designed to help you cruise through your miles with ease. It offers a smooth, rockered ride and a high level of underfoot protection, reducing the strain on your body across long or frequent runs.
Rocker Geometry & the Evolution of Cushioning
Running shoe design has evolved significantly over the past decade. While earlier shoes focused heavily on soft cushioning—especially in the heel, with 12mm or more heel-to-toe drop—modern designs now aim to improve both comfort and biomechanics. The shift has moved towards rockered midsoles and lower drops to promote a smoother, more upright running posture. These designs work the glutes and hamstrings more effectively, helping runners use their musculature more efficiently and reduce reliance on passive structures like joints.
The Brooks Ghost Max 3 and the more cushioned Brooks Glycerin Max follow this newer, rocker-based approach. In contrast, the Brooks Ghost 17 and Brooks Glycerin 22 retain a more traditional flat design without a rocker, relying more on the runner’s natural gait.
Which is better? That’s up for debate. Rockered shoes can help activate the correct muscles and encourage better form over time. However, they also do more of the work for you, providing less muscular stimulation. Many runners notice this difference when switching back to a non-rockered shoe after weeks in one that “guides” the foot. Alternating between shoe types is likely the most balanced approach.
Upper Fit & Comfort Updates
The key update in the Ghost Max 3 is the upper. Like other Brooks trainers, the heel cup is firm and supportive with generous padding that extends around the collar and tongue. This plush construction creates the signature Brooks step-in feel. The tongue includes two lace loops (tongue stays) to prevent it from slipping to one side while running. There’s also an extra eyelet for optional heel-lock lacing or a butterfly lace configuration.
The engineered double jacquard mesh upper is soft and breathable. The standout improvement is the redesigned toe box, which is more rounded with a straighter big toe line. This allows your toes to splay more naturally and improves push-off from the big toe. In the previous Ghost Max model, the more tapered toe box pushed the big toe inwards, which weakened push-off and caused discomfort, especially downhill. The Ghost Max 3 has resolved this, delivering comfort and stability even on descents.
Midsole & Ride
The midsole is made from Brooks’ DNA Loft v3 foam—a nitrogen-infused compound. Sealing the foam in this way prevents water and debris from entering, helping to maintain long-term durability and consistent ride quality. It also creates a lightly bouncy feel that’s subtle but effective. The foam deforms on impact and springs back, giving just a touch of energy return without disrupting your stride.
The defining feature of the Ghost Max 3 is the GlideRoll Rocker, a curved midsole geometry that promotes forward momentum. It’s designed to help runners cruise at an easy pace rather than push them into high-cadence turnover like some performance-oriented rockered shoes. It feels natural and relaxed—ideal for long, steady miles. The ride is impressively stable, thanks to the foot sitting slightly within the midsole sidewalls for guided movement, and a wide base that flares from heel to forefoot for added platform support.
Flexibility and Outsole Improvements
Though the midsole compound remains unchanged from the Ghost Max 2, the ride now feels more flexible and reactive. The increased toe box space allows for greater foot movement, and the updated outsole features additional flex grooves that make the shoe feel less plank-like. These subtle improvements also reduce the rocker’s rigidity, making it easier to run up steep inclines or switch to a forefoot strike when needed.
At 39mm in the heel and 33mm in the forefoot, the Ghost Max 3 is a high-stack shoe that sacrifices ground feel. That said, the rubber outsole delivers reliable traction in both wet and dry conditions, boosting confidence on descents or off-camber terrain.
