Blakey Blitz Fell Race Results and Report 2014
The weather provided a contrasting backdrop. Thick ice the previous morning caused a series of accidents near the start but we escaped that and despite the early cold the race set off into sunshine. If you were in early you just about dodged the hail storms and dropping temperatures. Paul Butler did his usual start and set off like a train pursued by Jason Cavill, Chris Roberts, Charlie Stead, Simon Rycroft and Joe Blackett. At 22 minutes in the race was between Paul and Jason , Paul leading by a few seconds. At the turn they were together and stayed that way until the final long descent where Jason pulled away to win.
In the women’s race Aly Raw used all her experience to achieve a good lead by the first road crossing from Catherine Evans with Julia Jackson not far adrift. As the race developed Catherine closed the gap and Aly had to dig in over the final section to win. In the team events Knavesmire’s better packing saw them win well from Esk Valley. In the women’s teams Pickering lead by Kim England had A & B teams in with Esk Valley next. The most improved athlete of the day was Esk Valley’s Andrew Mochrie who improved by over 30 minutes on last year. I’ll finish with my usual plea for marshalls in the Gisborough Moors.
