Altra Experience Wild 2 Review

Altra-Experience-Wild-2-Image-2-UpperThe Altra Experience Wild 2 is an everyday trail running shoe designed for door-to-trail runs and mainly hard-packed trails. They are lightweight, nimble, and deliver a very natural ride. Altra shoes were created to allow the feet to function naturally inside the shoe. The benefit of this approach is that it spreads the load across the feet, ankles, knees, hips, and lower back, reducing wear and tear so that no single joint is likely to get overloaded. This also allows the foot’s natural spring to contribute to forward propulsion, reducing the effort required to run.

To give the feet room to spread on impact, all Altra shoes feature a broad, rounded toe box. If you are used to a narrower, more pointed toe box, Altra shoes may initially feel roomy. However, most runners quickly get used to this extra space, and shoes with more restrictive toe boxes can then feel uncomfortably tight.

Originally, all Altra shoes were built with zero drop — meaning there was no difference between the height of the midsole at the heel and the forefoot. At the time, most other running shoes had a 12 mm heel-to-forefoot drop, designed to promote a heel strike. This created a braking effect at foot strike and didn’t allow the feet or ankles to absorb shock or aid propulsion, overloading the knees and hips. A zero-drop design encouraged forefoot striking, which loads the foot properly, allows it to spread on impact, absorb shock, stabilise the runner, and assist with propulsion.

Transitioning from a 12 mm drop to zero requires a period of adaptation so the feet and lower legs can strengthen and adjust to the additional movement. To make this easier, Altra now offers some models with a 4 mm heel-to-forefoot drop. These still allow a natural running gait while being easier to transition into. The Altra Experience Wild 2 is one of these shoes, along with the Altra Experience Flow 2 https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/altra-experience-flow-2-review/ and the Altra FWD Via https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/altra-fwd-via-review/.

In addition to the 4 mm drop, the Experience Wild 2 features a slight curve in the midsole designed to engage the hamstrings and glutes, helping pull the leg back on impact. This promotes a more upright posture and makes the runner feel lighter on their feet. The curve is not as pronounced as the rocker in other brands’ running shoes, so the Wild 2 feels stable and does not create an overly assisted ride — you still need to engage your glutes and hamstrings actively.

The heel and collar of the Experience Wild 2 are well-padded, as you would expect from a daily trainer. Inside the heel cup, extra padding on both the lateral and medial sides sits just above the heel bone to hold the heel securely in place. When laced, the heel feels firmly pulled into the cup for a snug, locked-in fit. The heel cup is also very flexible, allowing it to pull in around the foot for additional security.

Like many shoes with a curved or rocker-shaped midsole, the foot sits inside the midsole rather than on top of it. This helps guide the foot through the gait cycle and contributes to the stable ride. The tongue is well padded, extending high above the laces so the knot and bow sit comfortably on top. A tongue loop keeps it from sliding, and there’s an extra eyelet for a heel-lock or butterfly lacing technique if needed.

Altra-Experience-Wild-2-Image-1-OutsoleThe midsole uses compression-moulded EVA, as in the original version, but is now 2 mm thinner (30 mm in the heel and 26 mm in the forefoot). This change improves flexibility, making it easier for the shoe to adapt to rocks, roots, and other trail obstacles. There’s more ground feel and a slightly more natural flex. The midsole feels firm and responsive rather than soft and squishy — ideal for allowing the foot to sense the ground, spread on impact, and function as intended.

The outsole retains the same pattern and MaxTrac rubber as the previous version, offering reliable traction in both wet and dry conditions while being durable enough for occasional tarmac use. The 4 mm lugs are shaped to provide grip on climbs and descents, running smoothly on hard-packed trails. They offer moderate traction on wet terrain but are not aggressive enough for soft, muddy ground.

At 293 g in a men’s UK 9.5 and 250 g in a women’s UK 6.5, the Experience Wild 2 is pleasingly light. Combined with its nimble ride, it feels quick and agile underfoot.

The light mesh upper is airy, breathable, and soft to the touch. Protective overlays at the toe and heel help resist abrasion from grit and debris. A Velcro gaiter trap on the heel allows for easy attachment of trail gaiters to keep debris out or add warmth in cold weather.

Sizing is similar to Topo, Brooks, Saucony, and 361. If you normally wear Hoka, New Balance, Inov-8, Karhu, or La Sportiva, try half a size smaller in Altra to achieve a comparable fit (e.g. UK 11.5 in Hoka ≈ UK 11 in Altra).

If you want a lightweight, nimble, and responsive trail running shoe, the Altra Experience Wild 2 is well worth considering. The firmer, more responsive ride is a refreshing change from the increasingly common soft midsoles. On my local riverbank runs, where I am constantly hopping over tree roots, the Wild 2 felt stable, agile, and fun to run in.

Despite the firm midsole feel, there is enough cushioning to handle a short road run to the trail and plenty of protection for long runs on hard-packed terrain. The midsole flex allows you to roll over uneven ground smoothly rather than being thrown off balance.

I found the Wild 2 responsive enough for quicker runs, including intervals and hill repeats, yet cushioned enough for several hours of running. If you are used to very soft midsoles, the Wild 2 may feel firm at first, but this sensation quickly fades.

In summary: the Altra Experience Wild 2 is a versatile everyday trail running shoe that promotes natural foot function, offers excellent ground feel, and delivers a light, nimble ride. These are best suited for runners looking for a responsive, agile shoe rather than a highly cushioned long-distance cruiser.

Alternatives to Altra Experience Wild 2

361 Futura 2: The Futura 2 has a much more pointed toe box and a much softer ride. The 6mm lugs provide better traction on soft ground but there is very little ground feel. Available in two widths Men’s and Women’s. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/361-futura-2-review/

Saucony Peregrine 15: A straight big toe line does allow some foot function and a positive toe off but, doesn’t encourage the foot to spread as much as a broad rounded toe box like the Experience Wild 2. Traction is better on soft ground as the lugs are longer. There is less ground feel and hence the ride doesn’t feel as nimble. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/saucony-peregrine-15-review/

Inov-8 Trailtalon: The 6mm lugs provide better traction on soft ground. However, they aren’t as smooth on hard packed surfaces. The toe box has a similar broad rounded shape, and the midsole is similarly firm and responsive. The Trailtalon is available in two width Men’s and two width Women’s. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/inov-8-trailtalon-review/

Inov-8 TrailFly: The 4mm lugs offer similar traction to the lugs on the Experience Wild 2. The midsole has a similar firm and responsive feel with a similar level of ground feel. The rounded toe box is also similar is width and volume in the standard width. The TrailFly upper is less padded designed to absorb less moisture rather than supply a comfortable cushioned feel. Available in two width Men’s and two width Women’s. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/inov-8-trailfly-review/

Topo Terraventure 4: Topo’s have a similar broad rounded toe box to Altra’s and are designed to encourage foot function. The Terraventure isn’t as flexible and doesn’t have quite the same level of ground feel as the Experieince Wild 2. The lugs are longer and more spaced out which provides better traction on soft ground. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/topo-athletic-terraventure-4-review/

VJ Sport Maxx 2: All VJ’s trail running shoes have a rounded toe box designed to allow space for the feet to spread and function in the shoes (the fell and orienteering shoes still have narrower and more pointed toe boxes). The midsole of the Maxx 2 is nitrogen infused which gives it a bit of bounce and makes it more durable. The ride is still firm and responsive, and the Maxx 2 still have a very nimble feel to the ride. The lugs are 4mm in length but positioned well to give a good level of traction on softish surfaces. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/vj-sport-maxx2-review/

La Sportiva Prodigio: A firm solid feel to the ride but with lots of underfoot protection. The lugs are best on hard packed trails as they are rounded at the edges and don’t bite well on softer terrain. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/la-sportiva-prodigio-review/

VJ Maxx: This is the original version of the Maxx which has a similar midsole material to the Altra Experience Wild 2 and therefore a similar responsive feel to the ride. These are the type of shoes that get more flexible and responsive as they get worn in. Which makes them more comfortable and shaped more like the runner foot. The rubber on VJ shoes offers excellent traction on wet surfaces and although the lugs are designed for hard packed trails they still grip well on some soft ground. https://www.northernrunner.com/blog/vj-sports-vj-maxx-review-cushioned-trail-running-shoes/
