The Altra Lone Peak 9+ continues the legacy of Altra’s original and most iconic trail shoe, offering a distinctive blend of natural movement, roomy comfort, and versatile trail performance. Unlike many modern trail shoes that rely on rocker geometry, stiff midsoles, or heavily built-up cushioning to guide your stride, the Lone Peak 9+ takes a simpler and more natural approach. It gives your feet a level platform, underfoot protection, reliable grip, and the space they need to work properly. For runners and walkers who want to strengthen their feet and move more naturally, this is exactly what makes the Lone Peak such a long-standing favourite.

At the heart of the Lone Peak 9+ is Altra’s zero-drop design. With the heel and forefoot sitting at the same height, the shoe promotes a flatter, more balanced position underfoot. This can help reduce the tendency to overstride and land heavily on the heel, instead encouraging the foot to land more naturally underneath the body. When combined with the wide toe box, this allows the foot to spread on impact, helping the plantar fascia and lower leg work together to absorb shock and propel you into the next stride. It is a shoe that rewards active running form rather than masking it.

The fit is secure through the heel and midfoot but intentionally spacious through the forefoot. The upper wraps neatly around the back of the foot when laced up, with a gusseted tongue and lace tab helping to keep the fit stable and reduce tongue movement. The extra lace hole can be used for heel-lock or butterfly lacing if you want to pull the heel in more securely. The Lone Peak 9+ also includes practical trail details such as a Velcro gaiter attachment on the heel, a D-ring at the base of the laces, and a more protective toe bumper where the rubber wraps further up at the front than before.

The “+” version of the Lone Peak 9 uses a Vibram Megagrip outsole instead of Altra’s standard MaxTrac rubber. This makes the Lone Peak 9+ especially well suited to wet and slippery terrain, including damp rock, wooden bridges, wet roads, compact trails, and unpredictable UK conditions. The 3.5mm lugs are not designed for deep sloppy mud, but they are highly versatile across the mixed surfaces most trail runners and walkers encounter day to day. With a 25mm AltraEGO midsole, the ride feels protective but not overly soft, making the shoe suitable for trail runs, long-distance walks, hikes, ultra events, and short road sections on the way to the trail.
