The men's Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 is a carbon-plated road racing shoe built to help you run faster over distances up to the marathon. Compared to the previous version, it feels softer underfoot, has a noticeably bouncier ride, and weighs less—just 195 grams in a UK 8. While many carbon shoes are built specifically for elite runners, Brooks has taken a broader approach. This is a racer designed to be accessible and effective for a wider range of runners, not just those at the front of the pack.

READ BROOKS HYPERION ELITE 5 REVIEW

The midsole features a high stack of 40mm at the heel and 32mm at the forefoot—the legal limit for road racing. The foam is Brooks’ DNA Gold, a PEBA-based compound that’s light, soft, and highly responsive. There’s a full-length carbon plate inside, but the shoe doesn’t feel overly stiff or harsh. In fact, it’s one of the few carbon racers that can be used comfortably at slower paces. You could jog a warm-up or cool-down in them and not feel like you’re in the wrong shoe. The rocker geometry—combined with the curved midsole and plate—rolls you forward smoothly, while the soft foam helps reduce muscle fatigue and impact shock over longer distances.

The upper is made from a lightweight silicone mesh that’s incredibly breathable and minimal. The heel is soft and flexible, with a vertical stabilising strip and just enough knit padding to keep things comfortable. The tongue is ultra-thin with a padded section under the laces to reduce pressure. Fit-wise, it’s snug and race-ready—similar to a cross-country spike—with an extra eyelet for heel lock or butterfly lacing. The straight toe line lets the big toe sit flat and direct, which improves toe-off and gives the forefoot a natural, roomy feel despite the close fit.

Key Features

  • DNA Gold midsole: lightweight PEBA foam for high energy return and soft landings
  • Full-length carbon plate: adds propulsion and supports an efficient stride
  • Stack height: 40mm heel / 32mm forefoot (8mm drop)
  • Weight: 195g
  • Rocker geometry: encourages cadence and forward roll
  • RoadTack outsole: thin and grippy for confident traction in all conditions
  • Upper: minimal silicone mesh with strategic padding for race-day comfort
  • Fit: snug, locked-in, with extra eyelets for customised lacing

The Hyperion Elite 5 feels like a race shoe that doesn’t punish you for not running sub-3. The carbon plate adds a responsive snap without being harsh, and the foam offers enough give to keep your legs fresher late into a race. It’s most at home on flat, fast courses, where the rocker and plate geometry really get to work. That said, it handles turns and hills better than most plated shoes, though like all carbon models, it can feel awkward on tight corners or steep descents.

This isn’t a shoe to wear every day—it’s best kept for race day or dedicated speed sessions. Using it too often can lead to weakness in the feet and lower legs, as the plate reduces muscular load. If you want to train in a similar geometry, the Brooks Hyperion Max 3 (plastic plate) and Hyperion 3 (un-plated) are good options for building strength without over-relying on carbon. They also pair well with daily trainers like the Ghost 17 or Adrenaline GTS 24 as part of a full rotation.

Sizing Note

Brooks runs similar in length to Saucony, Topo, Altra, and 361. If you usually wear Hoka, New Balance, Inov-8, or La Sportiva, try going half a UK size smaller in Brooks. (e.g. UK 11 in Brooks ≈ UK 11.5 in Hoka)

In summary, the Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 is a race-day shoe with enough comfort and balance to suit a wide range of runners. It offers bounce, speed, and a smooth rolling ride—but without the harsh, twitchy feel of some carbon shoes. It’s fast, but still runnable.
