Running Shoes With Lots of Cushioning
At Northern Runner we have a fantastic selection of cushioning running shoes to choose from. You'll find shoes across major brands like New Balance, Altra, Inov-8 and experts in lightweight cushioning Hoka.
Soft Cushioning vs Responsive, Firmer Cushioning
We try to add as many details to our product pages as possible, and continue to highlight whether the cushioning on the shoe is either soft, medium or firm. If you are a heavier runner, sometimes it's energy ineffective to have softer cushioning that you 'sink' into. This is why road racing shoes, designed for speed and short(ish) distances are firm and responsive--no energy is wasted!
Hoka - Experts in Lightweight Cushioning
Hoka shoes in general have a slightly softer, thick cushioning compared with many brands. Customers simply cannot believe the light weight for the thickness of the sole. You also have a modest 5mm drop on many Hoka running shoes, despite the appearance.
Despite many being softer, designed for all around comfort, Hoka have launched the Clayton, Clayton 2 and Tracer road racing shoes, which are firmer and more responsive.
