Old County Tops Fell Race Results 2011
The Old County Tops is a Fell race that starts in Langdale and goes over Helvelyn, Scafell Pike and Coniston Old Man. A distance of 37 miles with over 10,000 feet of ascent. In effect it is like the first day of an Elite Class Mountain Marathon, a good day out on the hill. The check points at the Church at the top of Thirlmere and at Cockley Beck are great with cups of tea, cake and sandwiches (you don’t get these on the OMM !). At the finish there is cake, sandwiches, soup etc. The atmosphere is just great.
This year I ran round with Bob Johnston, who I have done too many Mountain Marathons with, trying to relive past glories. I blu a lot after Ankle Tarn and struggled over Scafell. Being blown off my feet literally at one point. But, after a cup of tea at Cockley Beck Bob managed to drag me over the last few hills to finish in under nine hours.
I have done this event twise now. Neither has gone to plan but, I will be back to have another go. Thank you to all the marshals and organisers for such a great event. If you are upto the challenge this is a must do event.
