It was snowing at the start with temperatures around zero on the top ridge but few runners seemed to feel it and the general humour was relaxed. In the men’s race Jim Bulman, Charlie Stead, Mike Jeffries, Duncan Archer, Ian Wellock and Nigel Tate were soon in a group at the front. Once they reached the Angel’s stair case Jim was beginning to pull ahead with a comfortable lead at the Trig. Dave Smith was the first veteran running on his own behind the first group.
In the women’s event it was Lizzie Adams who was soon in the lead but she was only just ahead of Pippa Archer and these two went on to contest the lead. Lizzie had established a lead by The Trig but took a somewhat eccentric route into the finish and only just won it by 13 seconds. Nicola Kent was just pipped to the line by Shelli Gordon but in turn Nicola was the first vet female just holding off Kay Neesam. North York Moors were the first Men’s team with Quakers winning the women’s.
