The Ronnie Walker Saltwell Harriers 10km Road Race will take place on Saturday 21st December. Saltwell 10km is the oldest road race in the country and was first run in 1911. Entry forms can be downloaded from the link or picked up in our Newcastle shop.
A damp, cold misty day that did cheer up a little as the day progressed. The going was extremely muddy due to torrential rain for the last week. At the front of the men’s race it quickly developed into a three way contest between Paul Butler (Loftus and Whitby) who took the early lead,Charlie Stead (Northumberland Fell Runners and Northern Runner) and David Beech (Tyne Bridge). The next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race series is the Commondale Beacon Fell Race on Sunday 24th November 2013. The race is about 8 miles long with a few ups and downs. Entry is on the day only and registration is at the Cleveland Inn in Commondale on the North Yorkshire Moors. The race starts at 10.30 am. Click here to view a map of the race route.
Winter weather arrives but at least the sun shone despite the temp hovering at about 1 degree C. A good day to run with firm ground despite the hard overnight frost not too much ice and little wind. The field set off with the juniors who soon departed on their own route having frightened the leaders first. In the women’s event Kay Neesam and Lucy Butt were setting the pace.
