The first race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series 2013/14 was an excellent event for viewing with the very best weather if not a little too hot!. After the old Glider Station circuit the field descended to cross the road near the start line. No sooner is the summer series over and the winter series starts ! The first event on offer for this winters excitment is the Viking Chase 4 Peaks. Simonside Fell Race will this year take place on Saturday 21st September 2013. The race is 11km long with 350 metres of ascent and starts at 2.30pm. The start and finish is in the Showfield at the Thropton Show near Rothbury, Coquestdale, Northumberland (Grid ref NU031027. Entry to the race is £2 on the day and it costs £3.50 to get into the show field. There is also a junior race of about 7km for over 16’s. Well a good sunny day with a pleasant breeze set the scene for a good run. The winner of the men’s race was Paul Lowe who had had to gradually reel in a very fast starting Paul Butler. In the women’s event Lindy Stockdale put in a fantastic run to hold off the in form Rhona Haslam This means that the overall men’s champion for the Summer Series is Cameron Taylor of Esk Valley with Paul Butler of Loftus & Whitby in second and Dan Middlemas of Dark Peak third.... It was an overcast night with drizzle and wet going due to very heavy rain earlier. At the start and finish area there were a few puddles but at least the midgies were down on normal! As the field set off there was a long line in the lane with half a dozen or so prominent. The final race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series is a road race. Which might seem a bit odd but, Castleton 10km is pretty hilly in fact it has more ascent than some of the fell races in the series. It’s also a nice day out at a traditional village show.
