Summer is here at last ! Or at least our Summer Fell Race Series is set to kick off on Sunday with the Fox and Hounds Chase. The registration/start/finish is at the Fox and Hounds in Ainthorpe near Castleton up on the North Yorkshire Moors near Whitby. (grid ref 704078). The race is 9 miles long with about 1500 feet of ascent and is very much a moorland race with lots of single track and heather. The fun starts at 10.30 am. Jasmin Paris running for Carnethy AC won the ladies section of this years Three Peaks Fell Race. The reigning British Champion beat Oihana Kurtazar Apanzeta from Spain who was running for Salomon’s Internationa Racing Team. Paris was tracking Apanzeta all the way passing her on the descent of the final peak, Ingleborough. Apanzeta did have a heavy fall on the summit of Ingleborough and has a suspected broken arm. The Fellsman, now in it’s 51st year, is a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This Saturday the 59th Three Peaks Race will take place. The event goes over the summits of Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough cover 24 miles. The event attracts hardened fell runners and fast cross country runners as the route has sections of fast running in between the steep rugged climbs. The event has become the one to win for all northern runners. Well back for the 35th Moors and still two men who have done them all – Chris Wright & Peter Whewell ( & one who has helped organise them all – me). It was another good running day with a wide ranging field in terms of clubs and abilities.
