The next race on the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series is the Broughton Woods Wobble. This is a 4.5 mile run with 1200 feet of ascent. The registration is at Clay Bank Car Park which is just South of Great Broughton on the B1256. The race starts at 10.30am. Although this is a short race it is exposed in places so come prepared to carry full body cover, map, compass, whistle as per Fell Runners Association rules. Click here for a map of the route.
This film showcases legendary running coach Arthur Lydiard’s training methods through the example of his acolytes, including reigning Olympic 1,500m champ John Walker. ‘Arthur’s boys’ (Snell, Halberg, Magee) scored attention by winning unheralded medals (two golds and a bronze) at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Lydiard later led the ‘flying Finns’ to similar success. His method revolves around building stamina to complement speed, and was influential in popularising jogging globally. Beautifully filmed, a doco highlight is Jack Foster’s exhilarating scree slope descent.
This years Gibside Chapel Trail Race will take place on the 20th October 2013. This is a very popular 6 mile ish run in the grounds of Gibside Chapel National Trust property. There are only 500 places and the event fills up quickly so watch this space for details of how to enter.

The latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series soar another fantastic turnout. ‘The Beast@ took place on a very mild day with temperatures between 3 & 8 degrees C. As the field left the start there was a wide range of choice exhibited in the ascent which eventually funnelled into two main streams.
