This weekend Kielder will be host to the final race in the English Fell Running Championships. The Kielder Blast is just short of 6 miles with 1500 feet of ascent making it an A Category Fell Race. A wonderful opening to The Winter Series. In between a lot of damp days we were blessed with a fresh but dry and generally sunny day. At the start there was the usual surge, like a behemoth rising up from the murky depths. Soon the leaders were flying with an extra competitor being the leading M16 Sam Garratt. Well what a night to finish the Summer Series. At 4.30 the rain was so heavy it would have been dangerous to run. At 5.00pm the rain drifted away and the instant streams disappeared. By race start it was damp. Bearing in mind that this event is usually where Juniors show the seniors what they are worth and with a very good turn out in the younger age groups. The Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series kicks of on Sunday 23rd September with the Viking Chase. This is an 8 mile course with about 1500 feet of ascent. The race starts at Carlton Bank Top and visits Clay Bank, Cold Moor and Crinkle Moor on it’s route. Registration is at Carlton Bank Top and the race starts at 10.40 am. There is also a 3km for under 12’s and a 4.8 km race for under 14, under 16 and under 18.
