Noonstone Fell Race, First English Champs Race 201

At the first English Championship Fell Race of the 2010 season Matt Speake took victory. Matt, an International Orienteer, has been perfecting his fell running at the Northern Runner/Esk Valley Winter and Summer Series, notably winning the Fox and Hounds Chase last summer in a record breaking time.
It was good to see lo...cal veteran Philip Sanderson, Northumberland Fell Runners, finish in with the mix as fourth vet and 19th overall. Hopfully Phillip continues to preogress as he has for the last few seasons and is in the fight for the medals by the end of the Summer. Olivia Walwyn, Altringham, won the ladies race with 4 minutes to spare. For results click the link

The 6th Red Kite Challenge 1st & 2nd of May

The Red Kite Challenge takes place in an often missed bueatiful part of Wales. It is well worth a weekend away to take part in. Details as follows:
Saturday - Welsh Senior and Masters Trail Running Championships, incorporating the UK Short Course Championships run over a hilly 11 mile course utilising some of the many rocky tracks, paths and forest trails in the Nant Yr Arian area, 12 miles inland from Aberystwyth.
Sunday - Ras Y Diafol run over 18 miles through undulating forestry and moorland starting and finishing in nearby Devils Bridge. The race also includes a relay event for teams of three, legs between five and seven miles.
Both events are races in their own right and runners can enter one or the other if they prefer, with prizes also awarded for the overall challenge for the best aggregate times over the Weekend. The courses are well marked with a generous prize list, with refreshments and showering/changing facilities at the end of both events.

Race 7 in the Northern Runner/Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series report:An overcast and damp weekend with snow still in the gullies but most of the course was runnable if heavy going. In the opening section of the men's event five men soon pulled away John Deegan, Richard Bewell, Ian Wellock, Andy Thorpe and Robert Addyman.
By half way at the road turn below the beacon, John and Richard had a lead over Ian with Andy and Robert just slipping off the pace. As they came into the last quarter of the course Ian had now closed on the leaders using different route choices. Eventually Ian began to pull away in the last section to win just ahead of John with Richard coming in third. Richard did however lead Wetherby into first team position from NYMAC and Esk Valley.
In the women's event Ali Raw showed that she is getting a bit of form back, establishing a good lead over Caroline Pollard and Kath Aspin by the half way stage going on to win. The minor places however were a much tighter affair with positions 4th to 8th being keenly contested. Caroline had some compensation leading the North York Moors women to a team win.

IROC Cancelled for 2010

With great regret the organisers have decided to postpone iROC 2010 until next year.
Although there had been plenty of interest from competitors and a hugely successful launch event in 2009, it would seem from competitor feedback that opting for the Bank Holiday weekend in May 2010 wasnt a popular decision and the organisers acknowledge that they made a mistake.
Race Director Shane Ohly commented, Naturally we are extremely disappointed to cancel the event but fully intend to bring iROC back for 2011 and well announce details on www.iroc-race.com shortly. All the competitors who had already entered will be refunded in full .
