Beginners
Whether you are a complete new comer just thinking about taking up the sport, or a fun runner thinking about taking things a little more seriously, this could be the place for you. Whilst we are developing our site, we thought it best to start you off with the most important information you'll need! So let's take a look at your feet...
So you want to be a runner. What do you need?
The first, and most important piece of equipment, is a pair of running shoes. Before venturing out to purchase a pair you need to first consider your running style, as this will help you decide the type of shoes you need. There are 3 different ways to run; to pronate, to supinate, or to have a neutral foot-plant.
But which of these do you fit into..?
There are 2 simple ways to determine your running style. The first is to take your worn training shoes into a specialist running shop, such as Northern Runner, where trained staff will be able to advise you. The second is the wet foot test - simply take a look at the prints left by your feet when getting out of the bath or shower. This will tell you what sort of foot you have. This can be a useful indicator, as to the running style that you are most likely to adopt. Although not conclusive it is a good basis to go on.
If you are a beginner, somebody who has re-occurring injury problems, or quite simply you feel that choosing running shoes is too often a hit and miss affair - we recommend a visit to Northern Runner. You can try a range of shoes that are suitable to your individual needs where foot-plant, the amount of training you're doing, size and any other significant factors will be taken into consideration.
Individuals who have more severe shoe problems have the option of visiting our Podiatrist who runs a clinic in the shop, every Thursday evening and Friday morning
