A wonderful opening to The Winter Series. In between a lot of damp days we were blessed with a fresh but dry and generally sunny day. At the start there was the usual surge, like a behemoth rising up from the murky depths. Soon the leaders were flying with an extra competitor being the leading M16 Sam Garratt. As they completed the first loop of the glider station Matthew Peake had established a short lead ahead of Paul Butler and Sam Garratt with Dan Middlemas, Dave Smith and Ken Maynard all still in it. This general order stayed until the finish but Matthew really put on the burners to break the old record by about three minutes. Sam went on to win The M16 in a new record. In The Women’s Race Kay Neesam in fantastic form ran an excellent race to head off her team mate Shelli Gordon. By the first loop Kay was leading with Shelli not far adrift ahead of a small group of women headed by Nicola Kent and Chris Raw. By the finish Kay was a clear two minutes ahead.
New Marske however did not have a third runner and were beaten in the Team Race by Thirsk & Sowerby and Pickering who packed well. T&S led by Chris Raw showed a promising start to the season whilst Pickering have their eyes on the title they won last season. In the men’s team North York Moors finished in first place down to an all round team effort lead by Stefan McLoughlin. In second were Esk Valley with Ripon third. See you I hope at the second event – Saltergate/Levisham on 14.10.12. Best wishes … Dave
