Race 1 in the Northern Runner/Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series 2011/12

Nothing like the first race of the season to get the juices flowing and awaken a new interest in performance and achievement. Paul Butler set off in the men’s at a very fast pace to lead over the first half of the race with Andy Blackett, Jason Stevens, Nicholas Barber and Lee Bennett giving chase. This continued over the first half until on the final hill Paul Barber managed to close up so that eventually he passed Paul going on to win by over a minute. In the Women’s Race Fiona Blackett threw down a very early challenge to Karen Robertson and Kay Neesam to have a clear advantage at the second major climb. Fiona managed to press on and came home around four minutes ahead with Karen and Kay finishing in that order. In the team competition Esk Valley with some excellent packing, led by Dave Smith, finished well clear of Northumberland FR and North York Moors. Esk Valley ‘B’ Team finished an excellent fourth. In the women’s event Northumberland FR were the winners from New Marske and Durham FR. One of the outstanding performances of the day came from Dave Tait in the Veteran 65 class, where he finished 36th overall in the top 25% of the field. In the women’s apart from those already mentioned there were excellent performances from Rachel Majundar and the much improved Chris Raw. Well done to all we raised in excess of £1100 for CS&RT. Hope to see you at Saltergate/Levisham at the Village Hall ………….Dave
