The first race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series 2013/14 was an excellent event for viewing with the very best weather if not a little too hot!. After the
old Glider Station circuit the field descended to cross the road near the start line. Here Duncan Archer had a good lead of about 150M with Paul Butler in second a good 100M ahead of Cameron Taylor. These three were now away from the rest of the field. In the women’s event Nicola Kent was already established in first and running strongly. The main chasers were Hester Cox and Emma Bain with a large gap to the others. On the climb up to the view point Cameron closed on Paul passing him at the top whilst Nicolmoved further ahead with Emma just edging away from Hester. As they came off Cold Moor Cameron made his play and passed Duncan to move into the lead. The women remained in the same positions through to the end with Nicola winning by almost two minutes a result reflected in the men’s event where Cameron went on to win by a similar margin. In the team event Thirsk & Sowerby were winners of the women’s whilst the men’s team event was won by Esk Valley. Both these clubs had a ‘B’ team in third. I now give my annual appeal for helpers. If you are not competing for whatever reason and can afford to give a little time the 15 winter events need course markers ( pre-race) Course clearers (post-race) Sweepers to follow the rear/tail of the field and various marshalls. Best wishes at the next event – Saltergate/Levisham….. Dave
