A grey start to this fund raiser for CMR. In the first climb up to the glider station Kay Neesam got away in the women’s field to lead by almost a minute at the next climb. In the men’s event there was a group of five at the trig near the glider station. At this point on the descent back towards the start area Paul Williams dropped like a stone in the descent and flew away from the rest of the field. On the climb out to Surprise View Andy Blackett and Paul Whitaker did their best to reduce the lead. As the race progressed this proved to be futile and Paul W. won it clearly. The next five chasers were up and down over the rest of the race with the race for the Summer Championship between Paul Whitaker and Chris Roberts with Chris initially closing on Paul Wh. Paul however dug deep to hold Chris off and win the N.E.H.R.A. Summer Champs by the narrowest of margins. Back in the women’s race it looked like Kay Neesam already crowned N.E.H.R.A. champion was in cruise control. In the second half of the race however Emma Bain came like a train to reduce the gap to nil by the final descent. In the five minute tussle in the final section Emma just beat Kay by 5 seconds to win. This was a sign of things to come with Northumberland Fell Runners winning the women’s team event in the women’s whilst York Knavesmire held off Esk Valley in the men’s team event. I will write a separate account of the overall championship results. Remember the 2015 lists circulating are in their draft stage that will be finalised by October. First Winter Champs Event is The Saltergate on 5.10.14. Click here to view the results)
