It was an overcast night with drizzle and wet going due to very heavy rain earlier. At the
start and finish area there were a few puddles but at least the midgies were down on normal! As the field set off there was a long line in the lane with half a dozen or so prominent. After the first part of the climb through the wood the field split into two:- the group following the tourist path and those going straight up the ‘chute.’ As they emerged out of the trees the tourist path group were clearly ahead but as soon as they had merged
the field split again into four different routes:- Tourist path, middle grassy slope, edge of the scree but still on grass and the 4th group directly up the scree. It was difficult to see at
this point due to the mist. Blue and red vests were almost invisible so it was difficult to
see where Nick, and Cameron were but Andy stood out in his predominently white vest. It was not till they were back on the lane that it was clear that Nick had a good lead from Andy with Cameron closing all the time in 3rd. In the women’s race it was a battle between Emma Clapton from the junior section and Shelli Gordon who were close to each other all race with Shelli benefitting from some local knowledge. Once Emma had the lead she was able to just hold on from Shelli with
Caroline Pollard in third. North York Moors were the team winners for women whilst Esk Valley’s ‘A’ & ‘B’ teams were first and third in the men’s competition. This means that in the overall summer
championship The Men’s winner is Cameron Taylor of Esk Valley. For the women the Champion is Kay Neesam of New Marske H. … Best wishes Dave.
