A brilliant night for running very warm and a slight breeze saw an excellent turnout
particularly from the York contingent. As this is a navigation event on a small scale it was
fascinating to hear of the different route selections. All runners managed check one
where Trevor saw them through. At this point Dan Middlemas surged into the lead as did
Kay Neesam in the womens event. Dan was ahead of a tight group of men from
‘Knavesmire,’ Acorn,’ NYM, with Tim Harvey of Nidd Valley and Joe Blackett of Dark
Peak amongst them.
In the women’s event Nicola Kent, Ashleigh Thorpe and Aly Raw were not too far behind.
As they started the long descent Dan had a good lead but behind him things were
changing all the time on route choice. It turned out that Dan won by two minutes from the
wily, experienced Barry Atkinson behind him the two Knavesmire athletes Chris Roberts
and Giles Hawking were just separated by Kevin McLaughlin. Knavesmire going on for a
comfortable team victory with York Acorn in second.
In the women’s event the die had been cast earlier on and came through with Kay in first,
Nicola second and Ashleigh Thorpe just squeezing out Aly Raw for third. The women’s
team event was extremely close with York Knavesmire first by one point from Sunderland
Strollers. The Strollers now lead the womens Summer Championship. The men’s overall
team sees three teams tied; Knavesmire, NYMAC, and Acorn with Esk Valley just behind.
Levisham Limping is the next race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series hope to see you there. … Dave
