The In the second summer series event of the Dave Parry/Northern Runner Fell Series 2017, the weather did not disappoint with a mild,sunny-ish albeit breezy evening and Bryan Miller (Thirsk and Sowerby) and his team were rewarded with 114 runners, with
plenty of new faces.Ultimately the result turned on the final 800m, in a race characterised by the any choice
return from the radiomast. The steep descent from the radiomast has slowly but surely become repopulated with trees and is now somewhat of a maze, with a recce now a requirement.
Sam Garratt (photo) of New Marske Harriers led out hard from the off, taking full advantage of his early season fitness and led up until that final descent, route choice told with Paul Butler, Loftus and Whitby making the best choice to claim victory, two minutes back a cluster of 7 runners finished within a minute of each other, led in by Tim Grimwood, Swaledale and Martin Perry, Esk Valley third, and Sam claimed 9th overall
and first under 23.
In the womens race, it was a double victory for Loftus and Whitby with Catherine Williamson easing to the win just a few seconds shy of the course record, with second place going to Natalie Curgenven, Darlington Harriers and Cassie Holmes, York Knavesmire third. In the Team event it was Esk Valley for the men and York Knavesmire
for the women.
