The latest round of the Northern Runner/Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series was another excellent night for running. At the top of the first climb it was Lewis Rodgers leading from Andy Blackett with Paul Butler and Paul Williams just behind then Paul Whittaker just behind them. In the women’s event it was Kay Neesam and Becky Penty ahead of Vicky Brocklebank then Nicola Kent. The field was then to string out as they tackled the middle section. Positions changed a little until they reached the communication station. As usual there were winners and losers from here depending on descent speed and route choice. Paul Williams now moved up from 4th to second behind Lewis with Steve Hardy moving up to third. Paul managed to pass Lewis in the very last section of road leaving Steve third and Paul Butler 4th. This excellent packing by Loftus and Whitby allowed then to push Esk Valley back into second with York Acorn ‘A’ & ‘B’ 3rd and 4th.
In the women’s event Kay continued to press with Becky not far away. Becky however ( and I’m guessing here) used her club colleagues direction on descent to pass Kay.Shelli Gordon and Lucy Butt charged through into 3rd and 4th respectively. This allowed New Marske to win the women’s team just edging out Thirsk & Sowerby. A thoroughly good night. See you at Whorlton where it will be the standard route. .. Best wishes ….
