The last race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was the Maybeck Three Crosses. A cool day with a bit of rain and a strong breeze. Nevertheless the running conditions were good with a firm surface. A small field started this final fixture in the Winter Series. There were 14 marshals and 44 runners. A reflection on those who had left it to the last minute to gain ‘support points.’ The race set off at a pace with Simon Ryecroft and Ian McGrath soon establishing an early lead. In the women Kay Neesam who was allegedly having an easy one before ‘London’ next week, was soon away followed by her club colleague Shelli Gordon ahead of a group of more mature runners led by Sue Haslam and Hilary Coventry. They all passed through York Cross then took a lower line to Lilla Cross so that the marshals walked down towards them. By now the leaders were away well clear of the field but having approached ‘Lilla’ from the East continued in that direction. A whole group followed like headless chickens and by the time the marshals got back up to the Cross the whole nature of the race had changed.
Rob Williamson now led with Lee Rukin and Dave Bannister with Kay Neesam tucking in behind these three. It was on the final descent that Lee nudged ahead from Dave and Rob. Kay went on to win the women’s and with Shelli second the team also.
In the men’s team it was Scarborough who won ahead of Esk Valley. Well done to Kay and Chris Roberts respective Winter Champions for their gender. See you at Carlton for the first of the Summer Series on 6/5/15 at 7.15 parking on the cafe site. Full prize list and fund raiser for C.M.R.T. …. Dave. Click here for results.
