It was a cool night but despite rain earlier the going was still quite firm and fast. At the start it was Dan Middlemas with a little local knowledge who shot off into an early lead. After a couple of Km he was caught by Paul Butler and Stuart Carmichael with Cameron Taylor in fourth at this stage. As they reached the top moor places continued to change with the front three having now dropped Dan after his early efforts and Matt Hayes having also put himself in a good attacking position. The lead was never settled until in the last Km. Stuart led Cameron until the last gasp of the penultimate field when suddenly Cameron put in a surge to break clear and win by a narrow margin from Stuart. The second U23 male in James Channer put in another excellent performance to finish sixth.
In the women’s event it was another battle between Kay Neesam and Nicola Kent. On this occasion it was Nicola wjho showed the best form to win by about a minute from Kay. Both of these were well clear of the rest of the women’s field led by Shelli Gordon. Sue Haslam put in another excellent performance to finish not too far adrift of her younger competitors. In the men’s team it was my usual cock up at presentation as Esk Valley were the winners and Loftus & Whitby second a reversal of the previous event. The cake eating prize was eagerly contested with fabulous home made cakes and plenty of tea after the event. See you at Ossy..Don’t forget there are a few changes to the course. David
