The next race in the Dave Parry Winter Fell Race Series is Guisborough Woods Race on Tuesday 27th December 2016 at 11am. Registration is at Guisborough Rugby Club, Belmangate, Guisborough and entry is £6 on the day only. The race is about 5.5 miles long with about 1200 feet of ascent. Unlike other fell races this race is 3 laps long. This is because in years gone by we used to have winter and running over the moor would of been too unhospitable. The trick is to try and run each lap evenly which is very difficult to do. I have tried several strategies over the year but, always end up groveling up the steep climb past the old quarry everytime.

The loop starts on a good forest track before turning off onto muddier narrower tracks. The incline gets gradually steeper until you are high up in the forest. You then come back onto a good forest track which was resurfaced a few years ago (in the old days this track was a complete bog). The underfoot conditions are fast running at this point but, after such a hard climb usually your legs are not upto the job. You turn off this track into a single track path through the woods which is a fast steep descent and before you know it you are at the start and it’s round again for lap 2. Click here to see a map of the loop.

Although there are some good tracks on this route everything else is likely to be muddy so I would recommend using a fell shoe or very grippy trail shoe.

There are junior races at the Guisborough Woods Race for all junior categories, u8 – 600m, u10 – 1200m, u12/u14/u16 – 3km (1 lap) u18 – senior course (3 laps).
