The latest round of the Northern Runner / Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series was the Guisborough Grunt. The race report is here. Click for results: Another sultry night where the heavens opened 15 minutes before the start and everyone was soaked by the time they arrived at the start point. Equally runners were now hot & cags. were peeled off. The usual suspects set off at a clatter with Matt Speake & Jim Bulman breaking away pursued by Lewis Rodgers and Ian McGrath with Paul Butler in between. At the Greenhill climb however Lewis and Ian missed the turn to end up out of it. By now Matt was well ahead but having to check his map on the high level section. Paul was closing on the front two although not significantly. They finished Matt, Jim & Paul with the rest of the field some distance behind. By good packing Esk Valley won the team event, led by Joe Johnson and Dan Braun. In the women’s event it was another brilliant performance from Cath Williamson who finished well ahead of the other female competitors to set a new record that will be hard to break. In second and third there was a very tight battle between Shelli Gordon and Nicola Kent.
Nicola had almost 100metres advantage as they approached the last descent but Shelli was able to cope with the muddy descent and just squeezed ahead at the line by the narrowest of margins. In the team event Caitlin Webb-Ellis was able to back her two colleagues and Loftus and Whitby were comfortable winners. Don’t forget the registration for ‘Inclined To Madness’ is below The Clay Bank Car Park at about 300M east and down! Best wishes … Dave Parry.
