A windy but clear day, a little overcast although slightly wet underfoot, generally good running conditions was what greeted runners for the latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series. The women’s event was essentially a tussle between Caroline Graham and Kim England. They were very much together in the early stages with Sue Haslam, Hilary Coventry and Kirsty Struthers not too far back. As the race progressed Caroline was able to open up a short gap until at the finish and was one and a half minutes ahead. As Caroline put it at presentation this was her first win ever! Well done. The team went North York Moors way in the women’s event but there was only one point in it as Esk Valley excelled themselves but just missed out. In the men’s race it was again a battle between two protagonists in the form of the course record holder, Jason Cavill and Chris Roberts.
This was always a tight contest as these two were almost head to head over the whole route ahead of two men returning to form in the shape of Paul Butler and Danny Braun. Jason went on to break away on the final descent to take the race, just over 20 seconds ahead of Chris. Chris had his usual revenge however by leading his team – York Knavesmire- to team Victory ahead of Esk Valley and Pickering. Don’t forget to win your category you must do one support job in the series for a 50 point bonus, as well as gaining race points. Entries for the English Champ Race on 6/9/15 are hotting up so please get your entry in so you are not disappointed OR volunteer to help on the day.
See you at Blakey …….. Dave Parry
