Weather was set fair for the penultimate race in The Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series. In the men’s race Jim Bulman was away very quickly having established a 100M. lead by the Highcliff turn. He was pursued by a group containing Charlie Stead, Paul Butler,Jason Cavill, Bill Stewart and Chris Roberts. In the women there was a very close pack with Nicola Kent, Helen Cross and Aly Raw just off the pace. At the watering point just below Cook’s Nicola and Helen continued to be close with Helen leading, whereas in the men Jim had now established a good lead of about 3 minutes from Paul Butler and David Beech. Unfortunately at this point 4 runners were disqualified as they did not meet the Kit requirement criteria. Two others missed the cut off time and were directed to continue but miss the Roseberry Common Section. At Highcliff Nicola had regained the lead from Helen with Aly Raw not too far away. In the men Jim was now nearly 5 minutes clear of the field with Charlie second just ahead of Jason Cavill, Bill Stewart and Paul Butler.
At the finish it was an excellent win for Jim whilst Helen Cross came through again to narrowly beat Nicola for a great win. Knavesmire men were comfortable winners of the team due to their strength in depth and excellent packing. The women’s team was snatched by Scarborough who literally won by one point from Loftus m& Whitby. Best wishes to those who are at the Three Peaks but hope to see the rest at the Fox & Hounds….Dave.
