Eskdale Eureka was the latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Series. Report and results below:

Well a winter race at last but as usual the course markers on Friday got the snow and strongest winds. The temperature was allegedly 6 deg. C. But the wind chill put it down below freezing. Ice on Hograh Moor made it a bit slippery. The race unfolded as three leaders in the men’s and 3 in the women’s. At the first road crossing the women had separated a bit with Penny Browell with a clear lead followed by Laura Clark and Diane Jobson. In the men’s it was a tight little group of John Gilbert, Cameron Taylor and Lewis Rodgers. As they swung down towards the water splash John Gilbert in the men found himself back to third after missing the turn. Lewis in turn closed up on Cameron who was now leading. In the women at The Water Splash Penny Browell was now about three minutes ahead of Laura and Diane who were quite close to each other in 2nd and 3rd. At the finish John had dug in deep and roared past Cameron to win with Cameron and Lewis in 2nd and 3rd not very far apart. Penny went on to win comfortably and also lead her team Elvet Striders to the team win. In the men’s it was York Knavesmire with excellent packing who just squeezed ahead of Esk Valley to take the team prize. Well done to the new hill runners who chose a difficult day for their baptism of ‘fire!’
Merry Christmas to you all. … Dave Click here to see full results
