The latest race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series managed to get the one pleasant day of the week, otherwise it could have been driving sleet or heavy rain. Whatever the weather the top part of the course was a very wet bog. Despite yards of tape in what we thought of as the crucial turn, runners managed to make a total ‘pigs ear’ of navigation coming in. There were runners off in groups puzzling over where they had reached! and where next! Consequently in the results you will see groups coming across the finish. Chris Roberts managed to out-sprint the leading group to win by a whisker from a small pack of five, any one of whom could have won with better navigation skills and a bit of cunning running. In the women Bronwen Owen won her second race in a row having also been sucked into the group error situation so that Kay Neesam almost passed her on the fell. The winning women’s team was Loftus and Whitby led by Nicola Kent and Angharad Owen, with York Knavesmire and New Marske just behind them.
In the men’s team York Knavesmire won in the end from Esk Valley. Points are now getting tight in the overall winter individual competition and in the veteran sections. I will bring a complete update to Glaisdale in two weeks. Many thanks to course marker and course clearance and to The Cleveland Inn for putting up with us. Anyone not doing either The Blakey Blitz or The Gisborough Moors I would be pleased if you could volunteer to marshall.
