An interesting race with fantastic weather for this time of year. Despite two other local events nearly 130 runners turned up to contest the ‘Clart.’ The course had dried out a lot in the last few days to regain it’s clart status, otherwise it would have been wading in your wellies! A front group of about 15 athletes were clear by the first short sharp climb up the ‘curly wurly bank.’ This was cut to 10 by the time they turned towards the Monk’s Trod. The leading group was led by Phil Sanderson, Chris Roberts, Ian McGrath and Annabel Mason well in contention. As this group approached The Rabbit Hills there was a shout of which way, having passed the turn some few yards to the South. There was a definite shout of straight on and the front 10 shot off! towards the woods. Joe Blackett leading the following group of five which included Paul Darroch, Simon Greenwell, Stefan McLoughlin and Ian Chapman turned South West towards the ancient remains.
Kay Neesam at the back of this group also seized her chance to grab the women’s lead. Annabel was one of the first to turn back with three others but she was now 5 minutes adrift as she rejoined the route as it headed back west. Joe stated – local knowledge at last wins! as he held off the others. Paul was quite amazed he had finished second. Annabel did well to eventually finish second behind Kay And Kay’s club colleague Lisa Bennett finished third. In the team events both were tight affaire with Pickering winning the men’s and New Marske the womens. … see you in two weeks ….Dave
