Commondale Beacon Fell Race Results 2014

The latest race in the Northern Runner/Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series saw another day which was damp and boggy/muddy. We managed to catch a window in the weather between the extremely heavy downpours and the temperature was spot on for running. A record turnout for this event just short of a hundred. The races saw in both male and female events the lead runner going out from the start, taking the bull by the horns and asserting themselves over the rest of the field. John Young of Harrogate led up that first hill and did not look back. There were chasers however the main contender being Dan Middlemas who in the middle of the race managed the best navigation in the leading group closely followed by Simon Jones. John had finished fifth last year but went on to win his first fell race this time. York Knavesmire with excellent packing in the top twelve won the team event from Esk Valley.
In the female event Vicky Brocklesbank of Esk Valley made a brilliant debut to the winter league. Vicky was away up the first hill with Shelli Gordon trying to hang on with Penny Browell having her best run yet chasing in third. As the race developed Vicky continued to exert her authority to win from Shelli and Penny. The women’s team event was won by New Marske Harriers from Elvet Striders and Esk Valley. Well done to Thirsk & Sowerby who had included this event in their club championships and turned out in force. May I remind you it is 7 races to count in the winter league and then a possible further 50 points to anyone giving support to any event in the league. Click here to see the results.
