The latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was a great day for a race. Mist on the top which was thinning all the time and very wet going under foot. At the start of the Commondale Beacon Ian McGrath was leading with a group following consisting of Danny Braun, Chris Roberts and Simon Rycroft. They set off across the top moor with Chris moving up into third on his own. In the women’s event the eventual first three were all in a close group. This consisted of Kay Neesam, Anwen Darlington and Nicola Kent. As the race progressed there was change in the men’s with Chris Roberts catching Ian on the first descent. As they came back towards the wooded section Chris was now clearly in the lead still being chased by Ian and Danny. In the women’s event things remained tight. Although Kay soon established her first position on the first moor Anwen was not more than a few seconds adrift with Nicola still close behind her. As they came into the final section at Castleton Station Chris was now out of site to the chasers with Ian admitting later that he was hanging on at this point. In the women’s however there was no time to relax and the three contenders concentrated well to finish in this order. Chris went on to win and lead his team to team victory. In the women’s team event it was Angharad Owen finishing in fourth behind Nicola the gave Loftus & Whitby the team victory. Click here to see the full results.
