It was a very hot night with temperatures around 27 degrees C for the latest round of the Northern Runner / Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series. The course was as dry as a bone so going was good. At the start the usual culprits shot away in Paul Butler,
Cameron Taylor and James Bulman. The field was very soon strung out in the long climb up to the top. In about sixth position to the top of the first climb was Archie Lowe who then turned back to win the junior race in 11.17. There was a good group of women together in Aly Raw, Nicola Kent and Shelli Gordon at the front of the women’s race. James made a break at about Head House to pull away from Cameron and Paul but Cameron managed
to close the gap. Another break on the last part before Bilsdale saw James away again only for Cameron to close him down again leaving Paul slightly adrift. Finally James got away to win on the final descent.
In the women’s race it was more a gradual process with Rhonna Haslam also involved
initially. Nicola gradually ground down the rest to leave Shelli and Aly in a very close
finish.
In the men’s team race Esk Valley were comfortable winners ahead of North York Moors
and Loftus & Whitby. In the women’s team race it was a very close run thing with Thirsk &
Sowerby emerging as the victors over Loftus & Whitby and Scarborough. If anyone is
available to marshall at future events please let me know. It is possible to jog/walk the
routes if you set off early. A time can be given but you cannot win categories! Click here for results….. Best
wishes … Dave
