A beautiful evening greated the runners taking part in the Cock Howe and Beyond Fell Race. Which was the latest event in Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Summer Fell Race Series. The running, warm with a gentle breeze on top. The train set off with 76 athletes in competition. Pete Wilkin led into the first part of the climb but was soon passed by Jim Bulman, Cameron Taylor and Charlie Stead. As the race progressed in the men’s race Jim and Charlie were soon showing a little distance on the others despite picking different routes through the thick vegitation that has grown up this year. In the women’s race it was the ‘east coast’ runners in Kay Neesam, Nicola Kent and Shelli Gordon who were leading with Natasha Geere and Kath Aspin just adrift as they crossed into the first valley towards Head House. At Bilsdale Mast bottom Jim and Charlie
were in that order with clear air to the next group of Cameron, Darren Fishwick & Paul Whittaker- the current series leader. Jim was now applying the burners and managed to move away from Charlie to win by about 50 seconds. Five of the first six men being veteran 40 Cat.
In the women Kay equally applied acceleration after Head House and was a clear winner with Nicola just getting second from Shelli in the final 50 metres. In the team event The women’s was a clear win for New Marske from Thirsk & Sowerby,Pickering and Esk Valley.
