Winter weather arrives but at least the sun shone despite the temp hovering at about 1 degree C. A good day to run with firm ground despite the hard overnight frost not too much ice and little wind. The field set off with the juniors who soon departed on their own route having frightened the leaders first. In the women’s event Kay Neesam and Lucy Butt were setting the pace. Kay really waited until the rocks at The Wainstones before making a strong move and moved ahead as she descended the screes then on into the finish. Kay led the New Marske women to another team victory, with Durham Fell runners and Thirsk & Sowerby in 2nd and 3rd. In the men’s event there was a large group of runners near to the front after half a mile and this spread into a ‘crocodile’ as they approached the end of the woods. Peter Bray was now in the lead with Andy Blackett, David Beech, Bruce Crombie and Lee Bennett all still in contention. Peter was however able to open up a good lead over the next two climbs but with Durham FR. not fielding a fourth counter the team race was won by a consistent York Knavesmire ahead of Esk Valley ‘A’ and Esk Valley ‘B.’ Look out for the new event in two weeks from Commondale where you will encounter a more remote setting. Marshalls are always required. In the juniors first was Kyle Richardson- Scarborough, second Matthew Clark- Esk Valley and 3rd Liam- Chapman Esk Valley all in excellent times. Best wishes …… Dave Parry
