A pleasant day for January dry with a biting west wind. The ground was still suffering from the previous night’s frost and proved slippery in places. The main field set off and within
200m split into two distinct trains, one up the immediate climb and one at a diagonal to
the SW. Once on the top they quickly descended to the first beck jump whereby there
was a strong group of men away basically amounting to the first six eventual finishers. On
the ascent up to Roundhill the line soon spread out and four were now dominating the
race. Jonny O’Malley was now pulling away slightly with Dave Beech, Cameron Taylor
and Chris Roberts all in close attention. Once back into the woods Jonny made a decisive
break with the others always close. Cameron in third went on to lead Esk Valley to take
the team honours with the ‘B’ team second.
In the women’s event Helen Cross and Kay Neesam had a great tussle with Helen
looking for another victory as she headed the series leader in Kay Neesam. At Roundhill
there was a split of about thirty seconds which Helen managed to improve on into the
finish. Kay however had the consolation of taking team honours with New Marske just
holding off Northumberland Fell Runners and Pickering ‘A’.
In the juniors a small field saw Esk Valley’s Matthew Clark win the boy’s event from a very
competitive Jake Phythian-Lee. In the girl’s event Aoife Bennett just pipped Amy Phythian
– Lee on the line.
See you next at the ‘Wobble’ ……… Dave Parry
