A damp, cold misty day that did cheer up a little as the day progressed. The going was extremely muddy due to torrential rain for the last week. At the front of the men’s race it quickly developed into a three way contest between Paul Butler (Loftus and Whitby) who took the early lead,Charlie Stead (Northumberland Fell Runners and Northern Runner) and David Beech (Tyne Bridge). In close attendance were John Young (Knavesmire), & Ian McGrath (Durham Fell Runners). The lead was held by Paul until they approached the ascent up from Castleton Station. Charlie had now joined Paul with David Beech slipping and sliding down to the road crossing. As they approached the last section parallel with the railway line the group was now rejoined. As they passed Fowle Green farm with 800M. to go David Beech made a break with Charlie hanging on but Paul now dropping back a little. David went on the just beat Charlie. In the team event Knavesmire, through good packing, took the honours. In the women’s event there were only two in with a chance of winning with Catherine Williamson always marginally ahead of Kay Neesam. As the race progressed Catherine managed to just open her lead with Kay always comfortably ahead of Catherine’s two club colleagues – Nicola Kent and Angharad Owen, who went on to take the team honours for Loftus & Whitby with New Marske a close second. An excellent first event for this new race so times will stand as records. Best wishes …… Dave Parry
