The last race in the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was Captain Cooks Fell Race on New Years Day the weather was a little unkind with fairly wet and blustery conditions but a great day was had by all. This was epitomised by some of the younger participants who insisted on showing me how muddy they were from slipping over. A record turnout for both the senior and junior events meaning we raised over 1900 pounds for various charities – all of them local! In the races it was soon a contest between the two good friends and firemen Paul Lowe – winner on 27/12/13 and Jim Bulman. Jon Malley, Chris Roberts, Cameron Taylor and Paul Butler were however never more than 20 to 30 secs adrift. It was not until that long charge for home that Jim was able to exert his superior speed to win by about 50 seconds. In the women’s event Bronwen Owen having at last achieved the age to run the distance was an outstanding winner. Many of the leading men must have wondered who this slight woman was who was running so comfortably in 9th position overall. Well lookout for the future. In the men’s team Esk Valley were clear winners from Knavesmire and Loftus & Whitby. In the women the team honours went to North York Moors ahead of Elvet and Redcar. I
am always amazed by the support given to our charity event and equally astonished that
where there are a thousand people in attendance press coverage goes to much lesser
events. A Happy new year to you all, see you next Sunday at Clay Bank East. (AKA as the C
Beast with ‘The Beast’ competing).
………….. Dave
