The latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell race Series was an in and out day with some rain and strong winds on the top but a lot warmer in the valley. In the men’s race Cameron Taylor was soon out in front with Chris Roberts just behind then a little group of Paul Darroch, Harry Holmes, Ian McGrath and Simon Collins. Cameron broke away only to miss a turn on the major climb up towards the Wainstones. After this detour he had to fight to get back to the front with Chris having an extra surge. Across the final moor the positions were cemented and into the finish it was Cameron first followed by Chris then a strong Paul Darroch just heading off Ian in the later stages. In the men’s team Esk Valley went on to win comfortably.
In the women’s event Kay Neesam didn’t put a foot wrong after last week’s detour to win in a record time of 44.51. Things are looking good for her London Marathon coming up shortly. In second place was the experienced Sue Haslam who saw off her younger rivals. Sarah Nettleton was third pulling away from two chasers in Diane Jobson and Lyn Humpleby. Diane went on to lead her team – North York Moors to victory ahead of Knavesmire and Esk Valley. Hope to see you all at the last of The Winter Series at Maybeck.
